A mother’s love is life-changing – especially for LGBTQ youth, who are growing up in a world that often fails to accept them. But a mother’s love can transform not only her own children, but truly the world at large. In short, moms make movements.

This Mother’s Day weekend, join us in conversation with four supportive mothers about their journeys toward accepting their LGBTQ children and then creating organizations that make stronger families and communities. Following the conversation, join these moms for hugs and snacks!

These moms include the co-founders of some of Horizons’ grantee partners, like Somos Familia, API Family Pride, and RYSE Center. We’ll also hear from the founder of Free Mom Hugs, which has recently received national attention for its members’ commitment to replacing others’ hatred with love.

Featuring:

  • Sara Cunningham, founder and executive director ofFree Mom Hugs, a group of affirming parents of LGBTQ youth who take hugs of love and acceptance to others and educate and advocate on behalf of the LGBTQ community.
  • Belinda Dronkers-Laureta, co-founder and director of API Family Pride, which is dedicated to ending the isolation of API families with LGBTQ members.
  • Mirna Medina, co-founder of Somos Familia, which works to create support and acceptance for LGBTQ Latinx youth and their families.
  • Kimberly Aceves-Iñiguez(moderator), co-founder and executive director of RYSE Center, an organization that creates safe spaces for young people, grounded in social justice.
