Tips for staying strategic during a divorce

On Behalf of | Sep 29, 2021 | Divorce, Family Law

Successfully maneuvering through a contentious divorce in California requires patience, skill, and strategic thinking. Unfortunately, remaining calm and collected isn’t always easy when ending a marriage. But “difficult” isn’t “impossible.” In fact, enlisting a therapist, breathing deeply, and indulging in healthy guilty pleasures may help you stay logical and strategic throughout your divorce.

Enlist a therapist

Talking to a professional psychologist or counselor about your fears and frustrations is rarely a bad idea. And when navigating a divorce, it can be downright palliative. A therapist will help you keep things in perspective, which is ideal for strategic decision-making.

Deep breathing

Doctors have different theories as to why, but study after study shows that slow deep breathing calms us down. When you feel your emotions elevating, sit for a few minutes and take deep breaths in through the nose and out through the mouth. Doing so will help keep you grounded, and that’s where sound and strategic reasoning happens.

Indulge in healthy guilty pleasures

It’s perfectly fine to indulge in guilty pleasures so long as they’re not detrimental. Drinking a bottle of wine nightly and smoking cigarettes probably isn’t the best choice, but binge-watching Netflix may be. When we allow our brains to turn off and snack on inconsequential fodder, like fluff television or sports, our stress receptors chill out. So allot a little time for brain-numbing nonsense. Your emotions will thank you.

Emotions don’t last forever. The universe is in a constant state of flux, and so are we. So when strong emotions arise, remember that they will eventually pass. Knowing this can take the edge off and help you return to a steady state sooner.
